8 ply yarn in yellow orange red, and a little black for the eyes

2 white buttons

In colour A ch 2. Into 2nd chain from hook, sc 6 times.

Round 2 – 2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next st, repeat around (18 stitches)

Row 7 hdc in all 9 stitches, and hdc in the second ch of your first ch. Break yarn and finish off

Turn work, and join yarn with a  slip stitch into the 6th stitch hdc in next st, then dc in next 3 stitches. Break yarn and finish off.

owl arrow

Turn work and join yarn with a slip stitch into the hdc next to the one you joined your yarn into on the last round. Hdc in next stitch, then dc in next 3 stitches,  break yarn and finish off. This will give you nice pointy ears.

Darn in all of your ends, then sew your button on with the black yarn. Embroider a beak with orange yarn, and you’re done!

I recommend blocking to get rid of the slight octagon shape formed by your increases 🙂

Free pattern – Sunrise owl coaster UK terms

I am part of a Pay It Forward crafting group this year. Basically you pledge to send a handmade gift to the first 5 people who comment on your post. They in turn make the pledge, and send to the first 5 people on their list. I made a folded paper crane garland for one recipient on my list who loves birds, but wanted to add a little something more, and so the sunrise owl coaster was born.
