Sweet shells pram blanket, US terms

Colour A dark  brown 100 gram ball 8ply (dk) yarn

Colour B baby pink 100 gram ball 8ply (dk) yarn

Colour C Dark pink 100 gram ball 8ply (dk) yarn

5 mm hook

4.5 mm hook

When changing colours, I simply ran them up the side of the blanket, rather than cutting the yarn and having a lot of ends to deal with at the end. When you add the border it covers up the colour runs on the side 🙂

With colour A and your 5 mm hook ch 56 stitches.

Stitch key

Ch – Chain

Sc – single crochet

Dc – double crochet

Sl st – slip stitch

With colour A and your 5 mm hook ch 56 stitches.

Row 1

sc into the second chain from the hook.  Miss 2 ch, 5dc into next ch, miss 2 ch, sc into next chain. Repeat this across, you will end with a sc in the last chain, turn

Join colour B to the last sc that you did.

Row 2

Ch3 (counts as first dc) dc 2 more times into the same stitch, skip 2 dc, * sc into next dc (the middle dc of the 5 dc) skip 2 dc, 5dc into sc. Repeat from * until you reach the last sc. 3dc in the last sc, turn

Join colour C

Row 3

Ch1, sc into first dc, skip 2 dc, *5 dc into sc ,skip 2 dc, sc in next dc, skip 2 dc repeat from * ending with a sc in the 3rd ch of your starting ch 3, turn

Border:

Use your 4.5 mm hook, or even a 4 mm, this will help stop the border rippling.

Round 1

Don’t turn work Sl st into the gap between your last shell and sc.

Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) 2 dc ch 1 into same space. Along the side of the blanket dc 3 ch 1 into the last dc of a half shell stitch, skipping the scs. 3 dc, ch2 3 dc into the gap made by the first loop of your starting chain.

Along this edge, *3 dc into the same chain that you did your first shell, ch 1 3dc into the chain you put your first sc into ch1* repeat  until you have 3 dc  in your last shell.  3dc, ch2, 3 dc into you ch 3 next to the last shell.

Ch 1, 3dc, ch 1 into your half shells along this edge, again skipping your sc’s.

At the next corner, make your 3dc ch2 3 dc corner into the first sc on the next edge. Ch1 3 dc into the middle dc of the next shell. Continue along 3dc ch1 into each sc and middle dc of your shells. 3 dc ch 2 in the same space you started in, joining you ch2 to the third chain of your ch 3.

Round 2

Turn blanket and sl st into ch 2 space.ch 3, 2 dc ch1 in same space. Go around the whole blanket 3 dc ch1 in each ch 1 space, and 3 dc ch2 3dc ch1 in each ch 2 space. Into the ch2 space you started in, 3 dc, ch2, and join your chain to the third ch of starting ch 3, and finish off.

Round 3

Join colour C into any ch2 space. sc ch 5 sc in chain 2 space, ch3, sc in next ch 1 space ch 3 . So you are going to sc, ch 3 in all of your ch1 spaces around, and sc, ch 5, sc in all of your ch 2 spaces (the corners). Join your last ch 3 to your first sc in ch2 space.

Round 4

Do not turn or break yarn, slip stich into ch 5 space. Chain 3 (counts as first dc) 6dc into same space. sc into sc, 5 dc in next ch 3 space. Continue around, sc’ing in every sc, dc 5 in each ch 3 space, and dc7 in each ch5 space. Finish off by slip stitching into the last sc of previous round. Break yarn and weave in your ends.

Pattern is  pram sized. If you wanted to make it larger, just add extra chains to you foundation chain, in lots of 6, and work extra rows.
