UK terms can be found here

5mm hook (I crochet quite loosely so you may want to go up a size or 2)

8 ply yarn in yellow orange red, and a little black for the eyes

2 white buttons

In colour A ch 2. Into 2nd chain from hook, sc 6 times.

Now you are going to crochet in a spiral, so I recommend putting a stitch marker in your last stitch every round to help you keep count.

Round 1 – 2 sc in each st around (12 stitches)

Round 2 – 2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next st, repeat around (18 stitches)

Change to colour b

Round 3 – 2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches repeat around (24 stitches)

Round 4 –  2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 3 stitches, repeat around (30 stitches)

Round 5 – 2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches, repeat around (36 stitches)

Change to colour c

Round 6- 2 sc into next st, sc into next 5 stitches, repeat around (42 stitches)

Round 7 – 2 sc into next st, sc in next 6 stitches, repeat around (48 stitches)

Row 8 – slip st into next st ch 2 (counts as first hdc) Hdc in next 9 st, ch 1 and turn.

Row 7 hdc in all 9 stitches, and hdc in the second ch of your first ch. Break yarn and finish off

Turn work, and join yarn with a  slip stitch into the 6th stitch hdc in next st, then dc in next 3 stitches. Break yarn and finish off.

owl arrow

Turn work and join yarn with a slip stitch into the hdc next to the one you joined your yarn into on the last round. Hdc in next stitch, then dc in next 3 stitches,  break yarn and finish off. This will give you nice pointy ears.

Darn in all of your ends, then sew your button on with the black yarn. Embroider a beak with orange yarn, and you’re done!

I recommend blocking to get rid of the slight octagon shape formed by your increases 🙂
